Visualizing w/ Mural

Identifying problems and creating solutions doesn’t always happen in a series of linear thoughts or organized lists. Mural is a design thinking tool that lets users collaborate and iterate flexibly, and these are some of the ways I use it in my regular processes.

brand design board

Sometimes when I start working with a new idea I get overwhelmed (in a good way!) with visual ideas I want to dive into — but there’s often other work to focus on before I put a lot of effort into design. That’s why my favorite tool for starting to build brand design elements is Mural, a visual collaboration tool.

narrative STORY Board

Stepping back to see the big picture is an important part of creating. I like to use Mural to pace out my storytelling whether it’s a visual deck or a piece of written content because you can dial into the details as much or as little as needed and keep moving pieces around before you do the actual work. Not only do you have a better idea of the overall story, but you can also track patterns you want to highlight and communicate seamlessly across a team of collaborators.

data patterns + workflow

Building reliable workflow is complex — answers to the “wh” questions (what, where, when, who, why + how) may have shifting variables and ambiguous concepts or assumptions that need team solutions. When I was in-house at a startup investment firm and frustrated with repeating the same work across different deliverables and checkpoints, I used Mural to drill down to the key data points involved and find logical workflow opportunities.

This evolving work led to multiple improvements for our small team: reduced time in data calculation and oversight, reduced number of document reviews, reduced need of “key man” in process, wordless team coordination, and communication of clear responsibility.
